Lessons from Sandeep Lahane

In this short eposide, I talk about my main lessons from talking with Sandeep Lahane — if you don’t want to listen, the bottom line is that I think Deepfence’s approach to open source strategy is excellent, though it is a departure from ‘traditional’ open source business models that focus on hosted versions, support contracts and open core / enterprise versions. Thinking of the open source project as a full fledged product that is part of a larger product suite is prevents the project from being positioning (inadvertantly) as a ‘crappy’ version of the enterprise option, and also makes the company seem more mature and capable of solving a larger set of problems for customers.
